What is the COMPASS test?

COMPASS stands for Computerised Pilot Aptitude Screening System (you may also see the American spelling, Computerized). It is a screening battery developed by EPST (European Pilot Screening and Training) that measures the core cognitive and psychomotor abilities a commercial pilot relies on: hand-eye coordination, spatial orientation, short-term memory, mental arithmetic, multitasking and technical understanding.

Rather than testing flying experience, COMPASS tests aptitude. That is the point of it. Flight training is a major investment for both you and your sponsor, so schools and airlines use COMPASS early in selection to identify candidates with the underlying abilities that training builds on. No flight experience is required for the standard version.

The test is standardised, meaning every applicant in a given recruitment drive faces the same set of tasks under the same conditions. That allows selectors to compare candidates objectively and decide who progresses to the next stage.

Who uses the COMPASS test?

COMPASS appears in two main settings:

  • Flight school admissions. Many prominent flight training organisations use COMPASS (or a COMPASS-based assessment) to screen applicants for integrated and modular training programmes, often before offering a place or a funding arrangement.
  • Airline cadet and pilot selection. Airlines use COMPASS-style screening within cadet programmes and, in its advanced form, when recruiting experienced pilots. Airlines such as Emirates and British Airways have been reported to use it within their selection processes, though each employer configures its own selection pipeline, so always check what your specific programme includes.

Standard vs advanced COMPASS

Two versions of the test exist:

  • Standard COMPASS is used for cadet selection, aimed at candidates with little or no flying experience. It measures raw aptitude.
  • Advanced COMPASS is used when recruiting experienced pilots. It includes everything in the standard battery plus a more complex control task and a series of professional knowledge questions.

The COMPASS test modules

COMPASS is commonly described as six tests in one, though the exact grouping and naming of the tasks varies between sources and between the organisations administering it, and some listings break the battery into as many as eight or nine distinct tasks. Do not be thrown if your test day groups things slightly differently. The abilities being measured are consistent, and they are the following.

Control (hand, foot and eye coordination)

A manual on-screen task, usually flown with a joystick (and in some set-ups rudder pedals), that measures how accurately you can coordinate hand, foot and eye. You will typically be asked to keep a marker on a moving target or hold a course while the system introduces disturbances. Smoothness matters more than aggression: small, continuous corrections score better than large, late ones.

Slalom (hand-eye coordination)

A related psychomotor task focused specifically on hand-to-eye coordination, often presented as steering an object through a series of gates or obstacles. Where the control task rewards stability, the slalom rewards precise, timely inputs.

Task manager (multitasking)

Two tasks run side by side on screen and you must keep both going with speed and accuracy. This is the module that most directly simulates cockpit workload: monitoring one thing while acting on another. The skill being measured is attention management, not raw speed, so the candidates who do well are the ones who keep scanning between tasks rather than locking onto one.

Mathematics (mental arithmetic and estimation)

A series of questions measuring numerical reasoning and applied maths, with an aviation flavour: speed, distance, time, fuel and rate problems. Calculators are not the point here. The test wants to know whether you can do quick, reliable mental arithmetic and sensible estimation under time pressure, because that is what in-flight calculations demand.

Memory (short-term recall and ordering)

Questions focused on short-term memory: retaining strings of information, recalling them accurately and keeping them in the right order. In the cockpit this maps to holding clearances, frequencies and instructions in your head while doing something else, so expect the memory tasks to feel deliberately loaded.

Tech-test (technical comprehension)

A technical section covering physical principles and how to apply them: forces, motion, pressure, and basic mechanical and aerodynamic concepts. You do not need an engineering degree, but you do need comfortable secondary-school physics and the ability to apply it to unfamiliar diagrams and scenarios.

Orientation (spatial reasoning and instruments)

Here you are challenged on spatial reasoning and instrument interpretation. Typical tasks ask you to work out an aircraft's position, heading or attitude from instrument readouts such as a compass rose and artificial horizon, or to mentally rotate and track objects in 3D space. This is the module candidates most often find unfamiliar, and the one where practice pays off fastest.

Aviation English and verbal reasoning

Depending on the configuration, you may also face a section testing aviation English (knowledge of industry-specific terminology and phraseology) and a verbal reasoning element measuring your ability to evaluate written information and draw logical conclusions from it. English is the working language of international aviation, so selectors want evidence you can process it quickly and precisely.

Worked example: maths estimation

Here is an illustrative practice question in the style of the COMPASS maths module (this is a Careerroo practice item, not a real EPST question):

An aircraft is flying at a ground speed of 420 knots. Approximately how long will it take to cover 630 nautical miles?

A) 1 hour 15 minutes B) 1 hour 30 minutes C) 1 hour 45 minutes D) 2 hours

Answer: B) 1 hour 30 minutes.

The efficient route is not long division but proportion. At 420 knots the aircraft covers 420 nautical miles in one hour, leaving 210 to go. Since 210 is exactly half of 420, that remaining distance takes half an hour. Total: 1 hour 30 minutes. Under test conditions, spotting the "half of the speed" relationship in seconds is worth more than grinding out 630 ÷ 420 precisely. Train yourself to look for clean ratios first and only fall back on full calculation when the numbers refuse to cooperate.

Worked example: spatial orientation

An illustrative practice question in the style of the orientation module:

Your compass shows a heading of 090 (due east). An airfield lies to the south of your current position. Roughly where is the airfield relative to the aircraft's nose?

A) Straight ahead B) Directly behind C) Off the right wing D) Off the left wing

Answer: C) Off the right wing.

Heading 090 means the nose points east. Face east and south is on your right-hand side, so the airfield sits off the right wing. The reliable technique is to build a quick mental picture: place yourself in the cockpit, point the nose along the given heading, then position the target on the compass rose and read off where it falls relative to you. How long does the COMPASS test take?

Timings vary by test centre and by how many modules your particular selection process includes. As a broad guide, expect a session lasting from around 30 minutes up to a couple of hours, made up of several short, tightly timed modules rather than one long paper. Rapid-fire sections may allow only seconds per item, while reasoning and calculation questions give you a little longer. Your invitation should confirm the schedule for your specific sitting; if it does not, ask.

Scoring and what happens with your results

When all the modules are complete, the system automatically generates a detailed scoring report. Rather than a simple pass or fail mark, the report profiles your performance across each ability area, which lets selectors see not just how you did overall but where your particular strengths sit.

What happens next depends on who administered the test:

  • Flight schools typically use the report to decide whether to offer you a place, and sometimes to discuss areas to develop before or during training.
  • Airlines and cadet programmes generally use the results as one gate in a wider selection process. A strong report moves you forward to interviews, group exercises or simulator assessments; the report itself is rarely the whole decision.

Required standards, retake policies and how long results remain valid are set by the individual school or airline rather than by a single universal rule, so treat any specific threshold you read online with caution and confirm the policy for your programme. What is consistently true is that a strong, balanced profile across the modules serves you better than one exceptional score propping up several weak ones.

How to prepare for the COMPASS test

COMPASS measures aptitude, but aptitude expressed under unfamiliar, time-pressured conditions. Preparation cannot make you someone else; it can make sure the test measures the real you rather than your first-attempt nerves. Focus on five things:

  1. Learn the format cold. Know which modules you will face and what each one asks of you. The candidate seeing a task-manager exercise for the second time has a real advantage over the candidate seeing it for the first.
  2. Rebuild your mental arithmetic. Daily, short sessions on speed-distance-time problems, percentages and estimation sharpen faster than occasional long ones. Work without a calculator, against a clock.
  3. Refresh your physics. Cover forces, motion, pressure and basic mechanical principles at secondary-school level, and practise applying them to diagrams rather than just re-reading notes.
  4. Practise spatial and multitasking exercises. These are the modules least like anything you did at school, and the ones where familiarity converts most directly into score. Timed practice tests are the most efficient tool here.
  5. Simulate test conditions, then rest. In your final week, sit at least one full timed practice session in one block, no pauses. Then protect your sleep in the days before the test; the psychomotor modules in particular punish tiredness.
