Every airline cadet scheme, flight school and pilot training academy has the same problem. Far more people want to fly than there are training places, and training a pilot is expensive. Pilot aptitude tests are how they decide who gets through the door. Before anyone sees a simulator or an interview panel, candidates sit a battery of computer-based tests measuring the raw abilities that flying demands: mental arithmetic under time pressure, spatial orientation, hand-eye coordination, memory, multitasking and calm decision-making.

Who faces pilot aptitude tests?
You will almost certainly sit some form of pilot aptitude testing if you are:
- Applying to an airline cadet scheme. Programmes run by or for major carriers, such as the easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways cadet routes, screen thousands of applicants and use aptitude testing as an early filter. - Applying directly to a flight school or academy. Integrated ATPL providers and academies typically test applicants before offering a place, because they want students who will pass expensive training first time. The major pilot screening systems, explained
There is no single universal pilot aptitude test. Instead, a handful of specialist assessment suppliers dominate the market, and the invitation email you receive will usually name one of them. Here is what each system involves and where you are likely to meet it.
COMPASS
COMPASS (Computerised Pilot Aptitude Screening System) is one of the most widely used screening batteries in European flight training, associated with the Dutch selection specialist EPST. It is a modular suite, and schools choose which modules to run, but a typical sitting covers:
- Control: a hand-eye coordination task flown with a joystick, often tracking a moving target or holding a slalom course.
- Mathematics: short mental arithmetic questions, frequently framed around speed, distance, time and fuel.
- Memory: recalling sequences such as headings, frequencies or instructions after a delay.
- Task management (multitasking): monitoring and responding to several stimuli at once.
- Orientation: spatial questions based on instrument readings and relative positions.
- Technical comprehension: basic physics and mechanical reasoning.
- Aviation English: language proficiency, since clear communication is a licensing requirement.

PILAPT
PILAPT (Pilot Aptitude Tests) is a British-developed screening suite used by flight schools and some airlines, particularly in the UK and Europe. It is best known for its distinctive psychomotor tasks, including a tracking exercise where you keep a marker centred against unpredictable movement, alongside timed tests of spatial reasoning, numerical ability, pattern recognition and workload management.
PILAPT places comparatively heavy weight on hand-eye coordination and the ability to keep performing accurately as the workload climbs. That makes deliberate practice unusually valuable: coordination tasks improve noticeably with familiarity, and knowing the test's rhythm stops the difficulty ramp from rattling you. cut-e (Aon): the airline favourite
cut-e, now part of Aon's assessment business, is arguably the supplier you are most likely to meet on a major airline cadet scheme. Its "scales" family of short online tests is widely used across European aviation recruitment, and several large carriers and their training partners have used cut-e batteries in cadet selection, though exact suppliers change with contracts, so always confirm from your own invitation.
A cut-e pilot battery typically draws from tests of:
- numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning, in short, sharply timed blocks;
- monitoring and multitasking ability;
- short-term and working memory, such as recalling sequences of characters or instrument states;
- spatial orientation, including questions based on compass roses and relative bearings;
- reaction speed and concentration;
- sometimes a personality or behavioural questionnaire alongside the ability tests.
cut-e tests feel different from traditional aptitude tests: each one is short, the interface is distinctive, and the scoring rewards accuracy under a tight clock. ADAPT
ADAPT is a pilot screening system associated with the UK assessment specialist Symbiotics, and it is used by a number of flight training organisations and airline-linked academies. It typically combines timed cognitive tests (numerical reasoning, spatial awareness, memory and workload management) with a personality and behavioural profile, and some configurations include a simulated flying task that measures how quickly you learn a novel control task rather than whether you can already fly.
That last point is worth absorbing: systems like ADAPT are explicitly designed so that prior flying experience is not the deciding factor. What they measure is trainability. You cannot cram for that, but you can arrive calm, familiar with timed cognitive testing, and sharp on the underlying maths and spatial skills, all of which are within your control.
Airline-specific and academy-specific tests
Beyond the big four systems, some airlines and academies run their own selection batteries or commission tailored versions. The practical consequence for you is simple: find out which supplier your target scheme uses before you prepare. Worked example questions
The fastest way to understand pilot aptitude testing is to sit inside two typical questions. These examples mirror the two skill areas that appear in virtually every screening system: mental arithmetic with numerical estimation, and spatial orientation with instrument interpretation.
Example 1: mental arithmetic and estimation
Question. An aircraft is maintaining a ground speed of 420 knots. Approximately how far will it travel in 25 minutes?
A) 145 nautical miles B) 175 nautical miles C) 210 nautical miles D) 250 nautical miles
Answer: B, 175 nautical miles.
How to solve it quickly. Convert the speed into distance per minute. At 420 knots the aircraft covers 420 nautical miles in 60 minutes, which is 7 nautical miles per minute (420 divided by 60). Multiply by the time: 7 times 25 gives 175.
The deeper lesson is the method, not the answer. Pilot maths questions are built around speed, distance, time and fuel, and they reward candidates who work in per-minute figures rather than reaching for long division. Notice also how the wrong options are designed: 210 is what you get if you sloppily take half of 420 (30 minutes rather than 25), a classic trap for a rushed candidate. Under test conditions you rarely need precision to three figures; you need a sound method, a quick sanity check ("25 minutes is a bit less than half an hour, so the answer should be a bit less than 210"), and the confidence to commit and move on.
Example 2: spatial orientation and instrument interpretation
Question. You are flying on a heading of 270 degrees (due west). Air traffic control instructs you to turn left onto a heading of 135 degrees. Through how many degrees will you turn, and in which direction will you be flying when the turn is complete?
A) 135 degrees, ending south-east B) 135 degrees, ending north-east C) 225 degrees, ending south-east D) 90 degrees, ending south
Answer: A, a turn of 135 degrees, ending up flying south-east.
How to solve it quickly. Picture the compass rose. From 270, turning left means the heading number decreases: 270 to 180 is 90 degrees of turn, and 180 down to 135 is another 45, so 135 degrees in total. A heading of 135 sits halfway between east (090) and south (180), which is south-east.
Questions like this also appear dressed up as instrument readings. For instance, you might be shown an attitude indicator where the horizon line sits above the miniature aircraft symbol with the wings tilted left, and be asked what the aircraft is doing. The horizon appearing above the aircraft symbol means the nose is below the horizon, so the aircraft is descending, and the left tilt means it is turning left: a descending left turn. The skill being measured is the same in both cases, which is whether you can hold a clear three-dimensional picture in your head and manipulate it quickly. It improves rapidly with practice, which is precisely why it is tested.

What skills do pilot aptitude tests measure?
Across every supplier and scheme, the same core skill areas keep appearing. Knowing them lets you prepare systematically rather than guessing.
- Hand-eye coordination (psychomotor skill). Joystick tracking tasks, compensating for drift, holding a target. This is the skill area most specific to pilot testing, and the one that benefits most from practising the actual task format.
- Multitasking and workload management. Monitoring several instruments or streams at once, responding to the right one at the right moment, and staying accurate as the pace increases. Tests deliberately push you towards overload to see where your performance degrades.
- Memory. Short-term and working memory: recalling headings, frequencies, checklist items or symbol sequences after a distraction. Flying involves constantly holding and updating small pieces of information, and the tests replicate that directly.
- Situational awareness. Building and maintaining an accurate mental picture from partial information: where you are, what is around you, and what happens next. In testing this shows up as spatial orientation questions, instrument interpretation and scenario-based judgement items.
- Mental arithmetic. Speed, distance, time, fuel, conversions and percentages, done in your head under time pressure. Calculators are usually not permitted, and the questions are designed so that good technique beats raw calculation.
- Physics and technical basics. Forces, levers, pulleys, pressure and simple mechanics. You do not need a physics degree; you need secondary-school fundamentals, applied confidently.
- Verbal reasoning and aviation English. Understanding written information precisely and communicating clearly. English proficiency is a formal requirement for an international flying career, so several batteries test it explicitly.
Alongside the ability tests, many schemes include a personality or behavioural questionnaire looking at teamwork, stress tolerance and openness to feedback. These have no pass mark in the conventional sense. Answer honestly and consistently; inconsistency is easier to detect than most candidates assume.
How to prepare for pilot screening
Preparation for pilot aptitude tests is different from cramming for an exam, because the tests measure fluency rather than knowledge. Here is a plan that reflects how they are actually scored.
- Identify your test system first. Check your invitation email, the scheme's published selection process, or our employer and admissions guides. Preparing for cut-e's short sharp format when you are actually facing COMPASS's module structure wastes effort. If you cannot find out, prepare across all the core skill areas; they overlap far more than they differ.
- Take a diagnostic test before you study anything. One honest, timed practice test tells you where your weak areas are. Most candidates discover their maths speed or spatial visualisation needs more work than they expected. The free test on this page exists for exactly this purpose.
- Rebuild your mental arithmetic. Drill times tables, per-minute speed conversions (divide knots by 60), percentages and estimation daily in short sessions. Ten focused minutes a day for three weeks beats a weekend binge, because fluency is built by spaced repetition.
- Train spatial orientation deliberately. Work with compass roses: pick a heading, apply a turn, name the result. Learn the standard instrument presentations, especially the attitude indicator, well enough that reading them is automatic rather than reasoned out.
- Practise under genuine time pressure. The single most common failure mode is not inability but poor pacing: spending ninety seconds perfecting question three and guessing the last five. Always practise with the clock running, and practise the discipline of committing to an answer and moving on.
- Refresh basic physics. A short review of forces, moments, pressure and simple machines covers the large majority of technical comprehension questions.
- Manage the day itself. Sleep properly for several nights beforehand, arrive early, and expect the multitasking sections to feel overwhelming, because they are designed to. Everyone hits their overload point; the assessors are interested in how gracefully you handle it. A candidate who stays methodical at 80 per cent capacity typically outscores one who flails at 100.
- Track your scores over time. Improvement across repeated timed attempts is the only reliable evidence that your preparation is working. It is also a genuine confidence asset on test day: you walk in knowing, rather than hoping, that you perform at the required pace.
